Alumnus wins “Technical Oscar”

March 23, 2013

Professor Doug James has been awarded a Technical Achievement Award at this year’s Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. James and his colleagues were recognized for their work in inventing Wavelet Turbulence software, a tool that makes it easier for artists to control the appearance of gas in on film and to make simulations look more realistic.  The tool has been used in many blockbuster hits, including Avatar (2009), Iron Man 3 (2013), Man of Steel (2013), and more.

Dr. Doug James completed his Ph.D. at UBC with Dr. Dinesh Pai in 2001.
